CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
A.Background of the study
Socializing and communicating to other people have
already been our daily activities in our lives, of course to do such those
activities, we need one of the most important basic element which is language.
It is essential to use a good language to communicate with someone, and with a
good language you surely could overcome any obstacles situation in this
globalization era. English as a foreign language is well known as one of the
most important language for development of every segments structure in this
country, such as technology in factory, education at school, business for
economic development, and of course art and culture.
Yet there is also one important aspect we need to have
a good and fluent conversation, this important aspect is vocabulary. The writer
noticed that most of the students are having some lacks in memorizing and
learning the vocabularies into the target language. This could possibly because
of the unsuitable approach and teaching methods given by the teacher.
Therefore, there are some effective methods to teach
English, especially how to teach vocabulary to the young learners. We can
implement one of the methods that usually used at the English course, known as natural approach method; as part of the natural
approach, according to the writer’s observation, students listen to the teacher
using the target language communicatively from the very beginning. It has
certain similarities with the much earlier direct method, with the important
exception that students are allowed to use their native language alongside the
target language as part of the language learning process. In early stages,
students are not corrected during oral production, as the teacher is focusing on
meaning rather than form (unless the error is so drastic that it actually
hinders meaning).
These conditions invite the writer’s curiosity to
examine carefully whether natural approach method in teaching vocabulary to the
student of English club at SDN Suka Makmur.
B. The problem of the study
Through
this study, the researcher formulates the statement of the problem as follows:
1.
How to the student can be mastering vocabulary by using natural approach?
2.What problems faced by the teacher when natural
approach method implement in
teaching English vocabulary?
C. The purpose of the research
Based on the statement of the problem above, the objective of the study
are:
- To describe the implementation of teaching vocabulary integrated by using natural approach at SDN Suka Makmur.
- To mastering vocabulary can improve the student to speaking.
D. Significant of research
There
are two kinds of benefit: theorical and practical. The expected benefit of the
study, both of theorical and practical are:
1. Theorical benefit
a.
The result of the research can be used as the reference
for who want to conduct a research in student speaking ability.
b.
The result of the research can have benefit for English
teacher in their teaching speaking skill.
2. Practical benefit
a.
Useful for the student as information to develop their
ability in speaking well.
b.
It can improve to the student speaking skill.
c.
Useful for the
teacher as information to be more creative in teaching poses.
E. literature review
The
writer focused on his research of improving speaking skill to the student in
teaching vocabulary by using natural approach and the subject is the first
semester student of SDN Suka Makmur in 2010/2011 Academic Year.
F. Terminology
1. Teaching
The teaching is the same of another
subject. Penny Ur said that process of teaching it has necessary to be broken
down into component for purpose of study such as the teaching acts of
presenting and explaining new material[1].
2. Vocabulary
I
know that "vocabulary" means all the words which exist in a
particular langauge. However, it seems that many people use it to mean a new or
difficult word. Even in English learning sites, I can see sentences like: A
list of commonly-used vocabulary with a recording of the words in Real Media
format.Has the meaning of 'vocabulary' changed or is the above sentence wrong.
Both of you are right about one meaning of vocabulary. But vocabulary can
also be more specific. Individuals have vocabularies. Also, there are
vocabularies associated with many areas of work, study, entertainment, and so
on. Think of the vocabulary associated with art, medicine, sports,
information technology, music, grammar, linguistics, and so on[2].
3. Natural Approch
Krashen and Terrell identified the Natural Approach with what they call
“Traditional” approaches to language teaching. Traditional approaches are
defined as “based on the use of language in communicative situations without
recourse to the native language” and perhaps, need less to say, without
reference to grammatical analysis, grammatical drilling, or a particular theory
of grammar[3].
G. Hypothesis
Hypothesis is tentative answer to
research the problem. A proof of the hypothesis is needed to find out whether
it’s accepted or rejected. In this study the writer formulates his hypothesis
as” the use of teaching vocabulary by using natural approach to mastering
vocabulary.
H. Research Methodology
1. Research Design
In
this study the researcher use an experiment research design. This study conduct
two group: experiment group and control group. Experimental group is thought by
using natural approach. While the control group is thought by anexample natural approach.
2. Population and Sample
Population
is the total number of subject, which are going to be observedfor the shake of research. since this
study was intended to analyze the student’sability,
the population of this study was a group of students selected to suit the need of this study. The population
in this study is all of first semester student of SDN Suka Makmur.
3. The Technique Collecting Data
In
this research the data collection by observing the implementations during teaching
wring class at SDN Suka Makmur. In this regard the researcher carriesit out intensively, objective and
systematically. The data are collected by severaltechniques, they are
(1).observation (2) interview (3) questionnaires
(4) test(pre-test and post test)
4. The Instrument of Data Collection
This
study uses writing test as instrument in collecting data. Students aretested by
ordering them to teaching vocabulary by using natural approach or without
teaching vocabulary by using natural approach.
5 Data Analysis
From the result of the treatment as stated
before, a calculation is formed inorder to investigate and find out whether the
use of natural approach has significant affect on the student's mastering
vocabulary. the test is canalized by applying the T-test Formula as follow.
t=

ma :
mean of the experimental group
mb :
mean of the control group
da2 : deviation of control group
db2 : deviation of control group
Na :

Nb : number of student of control group
